RAICES HEALTHY & SECURE COMPUTER
TRAINING PROGRAM
151 Graduates and Counting...
It began two years ago at
the Raices Times Plaza Senior Center. Six individuals with no knowledge
of computers signed up for a pilot "Computer Basics" training program.
What occured during the next 8-10 weeks (and holds true today) is that
practically anyone, no age limit, given the chance can and will excel in
computers given the chance and opportunity.
After
the completion of the basics training classes, these very same six seniors
spread the word of their success and accomplishments, that many others
requested the opportunity to participate in future classes. Hence the
beginning of the Raices Healthy & Secure Computer Training Program, a ten week
program that introduces basic and fundamental use of computers including
hardware, software, the
Desktop,
MS Word, the Internet, the World Wide Web and electronic mail (eMail).
As of today, the ten week training program has expanded and
is offered at three senior centers sponsored by the Spanish Speaking Elderly
Council-Raices (Raices Times Plaza, Red Hook and Raices Corona). Classes
are offered in two languages (English and Spanish), and continues to
expand (151 graduates to date).
During recent graduations at each site, the students were
presented with gifts and Achievement Awards from Raices. A special
moment arrived at each ceremony when representatives of NYS Senator
Velmanette Montgomery, NYS Assemblymember Joan L. Millman and NYS
Assemblymember Felix Ortiz attended the various ceremonies to present
Acknowledgement Awards to each graduate.
ONEAWAY -
CAMPAIGN FOR ELDER ECONOMIC SECURITY
Each day, more than 13 million older adults
struggle just to pay for food, medicine, and a place to live. Older Americans
Act (OAA) programs—meals, preventive services, senior centers, caregiver
support, job training, and more—help these vulnerable seniors avoid financial
crisis.
The Spanish Speaking Elderly
Council-RAICES as a OneAway Supporting Organization, believes
Congress should protect and strengthen the Older Americans Act (“OAA”) and
will continue to help spread the word about the OAA Support Drive. With Congress debating OAA reauthorization
and funding this fall, now is the time to protect the Act for today’s seniors
and strengthen it for tomorrow. Ask your members of Congress to show their
support for the OAA! Read more and send an email to your lawmakers now. http://bit.ly/Support-OAA

Talk about innovative. Members of the Raices Corona Senior
Center display their works of art during an Insperation
Presentation hosted by none other than the members themselves.
