The Spanish Speaking Elderly Council-RAICES is a 501(c)(3) not for profit organization incorporated in New York State.  Funding is received in part from the NYC Department for the Aging, the NYC Department of Mental Health, the New York State Office for the Aging and the Brooklyn Borough President's Office.  Additional funding is received from the United Way, private foundations, corporations and individual contributions.

Raices Casa BienEstar (Outpatient Licensed Mental Health Clinic) scored FIRST out of 52 other programs in three out of four areas and second in the last category in the FY07-Mental Health – MHSIP Adult Consumer Survey conducted by the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.  The surveys assessed the following individual areas:  (1) overall satisfaction, (2) access to services, (3) quality/appropriateness of services, and (4) consumer reported outcomes.

JOIN US AT RAICES' 30TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION

The Spanish Speaking Elderly Council-RAICES ("RAICES") was first developed as a volunteer advocacy senior citizen council in 1978 by retired Hispanic senior citizens led by Mr. Homero Rosado (pictured with wife, Doña Juanita), who saw the need for an organization which would provide services, educate and organize the Latino, minority and low income aged.  RAICES, in it's thirty years of existence, continues to disseminate information on successful practices and techniques for serving the isolated, hard to reach, inner city, and impoverished elderly through it's various programs and services.

The Spanish Speaking Elderly Council-RAICES will be hosting it’s 30th Anniversary Gala on Friday, June 27, 2008 and will be honoring the “Homero Rosado Leadership Award” to the following outstanding individuals in recognition of their work in improving the quality of life of minority, immigrant and low income older adults. They are:

The benefit also serves as a fund raising opportunity through the purchase of tickets, space in the souvenir journal and donations.  If you are interested in attending this year's Gala, please click here (RSVP and Sponsor cards available here).  Feel free to contact Antonio Barrios at 718-643-0232, ext. 223 or email us at GALA@RAICES.US for additional information.

AGE IN ACTION 2008

On Thursday, May 8, 2008 the NYC Department for the Aging ("DFTA") brought together thousands of older New Yorkers, prominent elected officials and a host of speakers and entertainers for a day of music, dancing and fun at Flushing Meadows Corona Park for its Age in Action 2008 annual healthy and creative aging celebration.

Appearances included actor Dominic Chianese (aka Uncle Junior Soprano), Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrion, Jr., and our very own Raices Astoria Senior Center Band and Dancers.

RAICES ASSISTS OVER 800 SENIORS & DISABLED IN FILING STIMULUS REBATE RETURNS

Shortly after President Bush announced the news that seniors, retirees and the disabled receiving a minimum of $3000 in Social Security benefits were entitled, the RAICES staff were up to the challenge.  How to announce, inform and file the required tax form in a proper and orderly fashion not just to the senior clients of their respective centers, but to share the news with the community to assist all seniors and disabled retirees.

Not surprisingly, RAICES' managers, programs directors, case assistants and staff met and coordinated a plan that included prep and training.  Letters and flyers were distributed, posters made and placed strategically at all sites, followed by daily announcements.  Within three days, all RAICES sites began preparing 1040s for their clients and neighbors.

We are proud to report that as of April 15, 2008, the RAICES team successfully assisted in filing over 800+  returns and continuing (yes the deadline has been extended).

A special thanks to the United Way, CSCS, and Ms. Darrell Weinberg from the Internal Revenue Service for permitting our Antonio Barrios to speak, assist and share our experience during their March 25, 2008 "Stimulus Rebate" Presentation to an audience of city-wide senior center directors.

SENIOR CENTER CULTURAL INITIATIVE CREATES ARTISTS AT RAICES SENIOR CENTERS

Last year, the Department for the Aging, in partnership with the Department of Cultural Affairs and the Council of the City of NY announced "bringing the breadth of cultural experiences" to adults attending senior center programs through it's Senior Center Cultural Initiative.

Five Raices senior centers were allocated funding for this new initiative.  For 13 weeks, members of the Raices Astoria Senior Center, Raices Corona Senior Center, and Raices Gowanus Senior Center  teamed up with Marquis Studios and participated in this new initiative and...  well you see for yourself what creative new artists we have at our centers...
