RAICES
ASSISTS OVER 800 SENIORS & DISABLED IN FILING
STIMULUS
REBATE RETURNS Shortly after President Bush announced the news that seniors, retirees and the disabled receiving a minimum of $3000 in Social Security benefits were entitled, the RAICES staff were up to the challenge. How to announce, inform and file the required tax form in a proper and orderly fashion not just to the senior clients of their respective centers, but to share the news with the community to assist all seniors and disabled retirees. Not surprisingly, RAICES' managers, programs directors, case assistants and staff met and coordinated a plan that included prep and training. Letters and flyers were distributed, posters made and placed strategically at all sites, followed by daily announcements. Within three days, all RAICES sites began preparing 1040s for their clients and neighbors. We are proud to report that as of April 15, 2008, the RAICES team successfully assisted in filing over 800+ returns and continuing (yes the deadline has been extended). A special thanks to the United Way, CSCS, and Ms. Darrell Weinberg from the Internal Revenue Service for permitting our Antonio Barrios to speak, assist and share our experience during their March 25, 2008 "Stimulus Rebate" Presentation to an audience of city-wide senior center directors.

SENIOR CENTER
CULTURAL INITIATIVE CREATES ARTISTS AT
RAICES SENIOR CENTERS Last year, the Department for the Aging, in partnership with the Department of Cultural Affairs and the Council of the City of NY announced "bringing the breadth of cultural experiences" to adults attending senior center programs through it's Senior Center Cultural Initiative. Five Raices senior centers were allocated funding for this new initiative. For 13 weeks, members of the Raices Astoria Senior Center, Raices Corona Senior Center, and Raices Gowanus Senior Center teamed up with Marquis Studios and participated in this new initiative and... well you see for yourself what creative new artists we have at our centers...
